Design

In order to produce a finished component which meets the customer requirements in an effective manner different aspects of casting design can be provided by Goodwins.

a) The casting manufacture is subject to a casting method design to predict the way the casting cools and solidifies. A computer solidification simulation programme called SOLSTAR is used to model the location of any potential shrinkage defects so that this can be minimised.

b) Physical design work can be carried out using casting knowledge coupled with  AUTOCAD drawing and modelling packages. For example to convert an architects 'concept' into a producible casting or to convert a forged product into a casting.

c) Design validation is carried out ANSYS stress analysis systems to verify the conformance of the casting to the design requirements. Mechanical strength, thermal expansion, fluid flow performance etc. can all be modelled and the design improved to meet the operating conditions.
